Why is cd and dvd copying illegal but it is not illegal to tape something from the radio or tv?

I think this whole copy right thing started with the advent of the ability to burn a cd or a dvd. What is the difference if I tape something off the radio or tv? That has been ok for many decades. I am tired of copy right laws.
