What is a good decorating alternative to painting/wallpapering?

Personally, I would consult with the landlord or building management and ask if they would mind you removing the wallpaper and painting the kitchen. They would be stupid not to take you up on that free labor for a job they would eventually get stuck doing themselves, especially if, as you say, it is dated and faded. It would increase the unit's value to the future tenants to get rid of the wall covering.
